5 health benefits of drinking coffee at work

It’s estimated that, of the 95 million coffees we drink each day, 1 in 4 is consumed in the workplace. A premium office coffee machine has become an expected perk for most modern workers, but is your morning latte doing you any good?
Here are our top five health reasons for drinking coffee…

Mood Booster

Coffee can boost your mood

A Harvard study of close to 51,000 women found that increased caffeine consumption reduces the risk of depression, and a Finnish study of over 2200 men found a similar result.

As well as the caffeine and antioxidants affecting your physical state, coffee in the office can boost your mental wellbeing. A strategically placed coffee machine can lead to spontaneous conversation and interaction as colleagues catch up with a coffee which, in turn, leads to a happier workforce with better interpersonal relationships.

Reduce Risk of Disease

In recent studies into Parkinson’s Disease, a neurological disease thought to affect around 1 in 500 people in the UK, found that participants drinking coffee regularly were less likely to develop Parkinson’s. Depending on the study, this reduction in risk of developing Parkinson’s ranges from 32-60%. As well as reducing the risk of developing Parkinson’s, the caffeine in coffee can also help Parkinson’s sufferers control their movements.

Similarly, in a 2010 study, Dutch researchers found that individuals drinking 2-4 cups of coffee per day had a 20% lower risk of heart disease than those drinking fewer than 2 or more than 4 cups per day.

Source of Antioxidants

Antioxidants are nutrients that help prevent the oxidation of molecules in the body caused by harmful molecules called free radicals. Many experts believe the damage caused by these free radicals can contribute to blood vessel disease and even cancer.

Contrary to popular belief, coffee provides more antioxidants than green tea, and whilst fruit and vegetables can provide antioxidants, studies show that coffee is the biggest provider of antioxidants in the Western diet!

Stress Relief

Feeling stressed? Grab a coffee!

Over 80% of those who take coffee breaks at work feels it helps relieve stress.

It’s well documented that a dose of caffeine (whether it comes from coffee, tea or an energy drink) can help wake you up in the morning and reduce stress throughout the day. But when it comes to coffee, just the aroma can have a similar effect. Providing a first-class coffee experience for your employees can help reduce stress levels and improve overall wellbeing.
